Han Byung-do vows to pass criminal procedure law amendment in this week's National Assembly session

Acting Democratic Party leader and floor leader Han Byung‑do told a party Supreme Council meeting on July 27 that the party will ensure the criminal procedure law amendment is dealt with at the plenary session this week. He said the amendment will separate investigation and prosecution powers, expand victim‑protection measures and strengthen oversight of investigative agencies, adding, “The Democratic Party will definitely handle the criminal procedure law amendment at this week’s plenary.”

The Democratic Party has also adopted the abolition of the prosecutor’s supplementary investigation authority as party policy and plans to move the amendment through the Legislation and Judiciary Committee before a plenary vote on July 30. The reform would transfer certain serious crimes to a new central investigative agency while retaining prosecution for seven categories of offenses against vulnerable groups, though critics note gaps remain for other crimes.
