Hana Bank issues $100M digital bond via Euroclear blockchain
South Korea’s Hana Bank has issued a $100 million, five-year digital bond utilizing Euroclear’s blockchain-based Digital Financial Market Infrastructure. This transaction marks the first digital bond issuance in South Korea to directly employ Euroclear’s distributed ledger technology for issuance, registration, and settlement.
The use of blockchain rails for bond allocation and payment settlement reportedly reduced the processing time from three to five business days down to the same day. The digital bond functions as a conventional fixed-income instrument with standard principal and interest obligations, but it leverages blockchain for recordkeeping and settlement rather than legacy central securities depository systems.
By connecting to Euroclear’s existing global settlement network, the bond allows investors to trade the instrument through their current accounts and trading systems. This move represents a shift toward institutional adoption of blockchain infrastructure for live capital markets transactions, distinguishing it from speculative cryptocurrency assets.
