Hanau and Berlin launch heat‑transition projects to boost renewable district heating

The city of Hanau approved the creation of a municipal development advisory board to oversee the implementation of its communal heat plan. The board will bring together representatives from politics, administration, business and civil society to discuss solutions, identify conflicts and develop recommendations for the city’s energy transition. The format is provided by the Berlin Governance Platform and funded by the German Federal Environment Foundation, the Mercator Foundation and the Michael Otto Foundation for Sustainability.

In Berlin, a 120‑MW power‑to‑heat installation is being built at the Berlin‑Mitte heating plant. The plant will convert excess wind and solar electricity into district heat, aiming to supply more than 30,000 households with fully renewable heating from 2028 onward and reduce CO₂ emissions by about 76,000 tonnes per year. The project is a joint effort of Berliner Energie und Wärme, 50Hertz and Stromnetz Berlin and is part of a broader strategy to integrate renewable electricity into the city’s heating network.
