Hanau and Braunschweig undergo major urban redevelopment

German cities Hanau and Braunschweig are undergoing significant urban redevelopment projects aimed at modernizing their city centers and improving infrastructure.

In Hanau, the area surrounding the main station is being transformed through various long-term projects. Planned developments include a redesigned station forecourt, a new bus station, and improved mobility options. A major infrastructure project involving the replacement of the main station bridge is expected to be completed by late 2026, enhancing connections for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Additionally, the historic Christuskirche is slated to become a social center known as a 'Diakoniekirche'.

Braunschweig is executing its largest reconstruction in decades, focusing on structural change to adapt to declining retail space. A central project is the development of the 'Stiftshöfe' on the former Burgpassage site, a 95-million-euro venture expected to be completed by November 2028. This site will feature residential and office spaces, a hotel, and an extension of the Kleine Burg gymnasium. The broader city plan also includes new light rail extensions, green spaces to mitigate heat and heavy rain, and cultural facilities like a House of Music.
