Hancock County leads Kentucky in average weekly wages

Hancock County recorded the highest average weekly wage in Kentucky during the first quarter of 2026, reaching $1,780. This figure represents a $30 increase from the first quarter of 2025, when the county also led the state with an average of $1,750.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these figures reflect the wages of jobs located within the county rather than the income of every resident. The county has a significant industrial history along the Ohio River, involving sectors such as paper and aluminum production. While the former Century Aluminum smelter in Hawesville has been idled for redevelopment, the county's industrial base continues to influence its economic standing.

For comparison, Jefferson County reported an average weekly wage of $1,540, and Fayette County reported $1,336 during the same period.
