Handball-Bundesliga president to leverage new star players for marketing
Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) President Uwe Schwenker plans to leverage the influx of international stars to increase the league's marketing visibility and media impact. Recent high-profile arrivals include Alex Dujshebaev at VfL Gummersbach, Dani Dujshebaev at MT Melsungen, and Aymeric Minne at SG Flensburg-Handewitt, with Dika Mem expected to follow.
Schwenker noted that the competitive landscape has broadened, with five to six teams now capable of contending for the championship, moving away from the previous dominance of THW Kiel and Flensburg. The league's strategy involves utilizing player personalities and stories to strengthen its brand, supported by new naming sponsor Opel and long-term broadcasting deals with Dyn and public service stations.
While the league is attracting elite talent, it is also seeing key German players move abroad. Juri Knorr has signed a three-year deal with Aalborg Håndbold, and Renars Uscins is set to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2027. Schwenker views these departures positively, suggesting that playing in different environments and cultures will foster personal and professional development, ultimately benefiting the German national team.
