Handwriting provides superior brain benefits compared to typing
Research indicates that handwriting offers distinct neurological benefits compared to typing on a keyboard. Neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez notes that the act of writing involves a complex coordination of motor skills, vision, attention, and language, which can enhance learning, memory, and information comprehension.
A 2024 study published in ‘Frontiers in Psychology’ utilized electroencephalography (EEG) to compare brain activity during handwriting and typing. Led by neurologist Dr. Fawad Mian, the study found that handwriting activates broader functional connections in the brain, particularly in regions associated with learning.
Unlike mechanical typing, handwriting requires individuals to process, select, and rephrase information, leading to more complex neural activity. Additionally, the practice can assist in emotional processing by allowing individuals to translate vague thoughts and feelings into concrete language through journaling.
