Haneda Airport Terminal 1 launches North Satellite expansion

Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. has commenced operations of the North Satellite facility at Haneda Airport's Terminal 1 as of September 1, 2026. This marks the first major expansion of Terminal 1 since its opening in 1993.

The new facility adds six boarding spots (gates 24–29) across three floors, covering approximately 21,000 square meters. The expansion serves a dual purpose: meeting rising aviation demand and providing a functional buffer that allows for the phased renovation of aging existing infrastructure, including pavement replacement and liquefaction countermeasures, without halting airport operations.

A significant benefit for passengers is the reduction in bus boarding. The Japan Airlines Group expects to shift approximately 25 daily flights from bus gates to direct passenger boarding bridges (PBB), reducing bus boarding from roughly 30 flights to five per day. To mitigate the increased walking distances caused by the terminal's extension, the facility features ten moving walkways and automated mobility solutions like 'iino' and 'WHILL'.

The facility utilizes a unique steel-and-wood hybrid structure, incorporating approximately 1,800 cubic meters of domestic timber. It has also achieved 'ZEB Oriented' certification, aiming to reduce primary energy consumption by over 30% and generate about 80% of its required electricity through solar power.
