Hangang Bus to implement differential weekend pricing and reservation system
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is considering a differential pricing system for the Hangang Bus to manage high weekend demand and improve financial stability. Under the proposed plan, base fares for weekdays would remain at 3,000 KRW, but weekend and holiday fares for adults could increase to 6,000 KRW. Other age groups would also see proportional increases: 3,600 KRW for teenagers and 2,200 KRW for children.
To address passenger complaints regarding long wait times during peak periods, the city plans to introduce a reservation system. Users opting for a reserved seat would pay an additional 2,000 KRW fee. A pilot program for the reservation service is expected to begin next month.
Research by the Seoul Institute suggests that while the price hike might affect passenger numbers, the new system could increase revenue by approximately 932 million KRW by 2028. The city aims to use these additional funds to offset operational deficits and maintain affordable weekday rates for commuters. The new system is expected to be implemented as early as April next year, following approval from the Seoul City Council.
