Hangzhou authorities crack down on entertainment venues

Authorities in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, have launched a crackdown on high-end karaoke establishments that employ female staff for entertainment services. Since the summer, several luxury venues have been forced to suspend operations following government inspections.

State-aligned media have characterized the actions in Hangzhou as a microcosm of a nationwide effort to clean up the entertainment industry. These venues have long been identified as potential hubs for corruption, collusion between public and private sectors, and prostitution. Some establishments reportedly generated significant revenue, with single private rooms earning as much as 2 million yuan in one night.

The intensified enforcement follows an incident in July involving alleged sexual assault by local government officials and real estate executives at a karaoke venue. The crackdown is expected to expand to other provinces.
