Hangzhou deploys autonomous T2 robots for traffic enforcement

In Hangzhou, China, a pilot program is utilizing autonomous robots to manage traffic and monitor rule violations. Developed by SUPCON Information, the T2 robot stands 1.88 meters tall and weighs 98 kilograms. Unlike humanoid robots, the T2 model moves on wheels and is equipped with cameras, radar, and integrated computers to identify various infractions.

The robot can detect motorcyclists without helmets, electric bicycles carrying passengers, vehicles stopping over marked lines, and pedestrians crossing against red lights. It is capable of issuing polite verbal warnings, answering public inquiries regarding parking and traffic rules, and using seven-jointed mechanical arms to mimic standard traffic police hand signals in synchronization with traffic lights.

Since its deployment in May, SUPCON reports that 15 robots have issued over 170,000 warnings. The company claims the technology has contributed to a reduction of more than 40% in monthly incidents involving helmet violations and improper stopping at lines. While the robots assist with repetitive tasks, they do not possess legal authority to make arrests; such decisions remain with human officers.
