Hangzhou documentary explores evolution of cross-border e-commerce

The documentary seriesCross-Border E-Commerce: Stories from China’ has reached over 8.35 million views on international platforms since its July release. Produced by the Hangzhou International Communication Center in partnership with the Hangzhou Cross-border E-commerce Comprehensive Pilot Area, the series explores how enterprises are shifting from simple commodity sales to brand-driven cultural storytelling.

The film highlights several case studies, including the development of specialized fishing gear for Australian markets and the repurposing of hardware tools as lifestyle gifts in North America. It also examines the impact of rapid supply chains, such as a rotating chair brand that fulfilled 90% of U.S. orders within two days.

Since 2015, Hangzhou’s cross-border e-commerce trade volume has increased 1,266-fold, with the number of sellers growing from 200 to over 65,000. The documentary also identifies emerging industry trends, including the rise of AI-powered ‘one-person companies’ and the use of bonded warehouses as live-streaming studios to enhance logistics transparency.
