Hangzhou family renovates old house to blend modern and traditional styles

A family in Hangzhou, China, has completed a comprehensive renovation of an old 75m2 house to create a more stable and comfortable long-term living environment. After 17 years of renting, the family purchased an older property with a large garden to accommodate their growing household.

The original structure suffered from significant issues, including poor ventilation, insufficient natural light, cramped living spaces, and outdated facilities. The kitchen was too small for efficient use, and the bedrooms were dark and poorly ventilated. Additionally, the property faced noise pollution from nearby roads and a degraded courtyard with uneven surfaces.

The renovation transformed the home into an elegant space that blends modern living with traditional Chinese architectural and landscape elements. Key improvements include an open-concept kitchen with a long bar and integrated storage, a multifunctional living room, and redesigned bedrooms that maximize natural light through large floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The layout was specifically optimized to accommodate a growing family, including space for a new baby.
