China foreign trade grows 17.6% in first eight months of 2026

China's foreign trade experienced robust growth during the first eight months of 2026. Total goods imports and exports reached 34.78 trillion yuan, a 17.6% year-on-year increase. Exports rose 14.6% to 20.17 trillion yuan, while imports expanded by 22% to 14.61 trillion yuan.

Growth was heavily driven by high-tech sectors. High-tech product exports increased by 42.9% in US dollar terms, with integrated circuit exports surging 95.4% to 1.77 trillion yuan. In August, exports grew 18.6% and imports rose 21.7%.

To support industrial evolution, China officially recognized 11 new professions and 23 new specializations, including roles in AI agent development and embodied intelligence robotics. Additionally, the fifth Global Digital Trade Expo is scheduled for September 23–27 in Hangzhou, with artificial intelligence as a central theme. The expo expects international purchase orders to reach 977 million US dollars, with international exhibitors making up over 20% of the total.
