Haninge dementia care home faces allegations of declining standards

Relatives and staff at the Vallagården dementia care home in Haninge have raised alarms regarding deteriorating care standards. Critics, including the union Kommunal, attribute the decline to municipal budget cuts, noting that staffing levels have fallen below those in private facilities. Reported issues include poor hygiene, lack of outdoor access for residents, and insufficient social interaction. Some staff members are reportedly working alone with eight dementia patients, despite municipal guidelines suggesting a ratio of one staff member per four and a half residents.

In response to these concerns, relatives have filed formal complaints with the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO), the Swedish Work Environment Authority, and the Parliamentary Ombudsmen.

In a separate response regarding patient safety, healthcare officials from Region Västernorrland emphasized that protecting vulnerable elderly patients and those with dementia is a priority. They stated that strict risk assessment routines are in place to prevent falls and that individual measures, such as environmental adjustments and increased supervision, are implemented as needed. Officials acknowledged the impact of dementia on families and stressed the importance of clear communication with relatives during difficult situations.
