Hank Williams: The legacy of a country music icon

Hank Williams, an Alabama native and one of the most influential figures in country music history, was born on September 17, 1923. Inducted as one of the first artists into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961, Williams recorded over thirty singles that reached the top ten on the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart, with eleven reaching number one.

His musical legacy includes hits such as ‘Move It on Over’, his first national release on MGM Records in 1947, and ‘Kaw-Liga’, which reached number one shortly after his death. His posthumous success continued with the 1989 Grammy-winning collaboration ‘There’s a Tear in My Beer’, featuring his vocals paired with those of his son, Hank Williams Jr.

Williams passed away on January 1, 1953, at the age of 29, due to complications from the abuse of alcohol, drugs, and painkillers.
