Hankook Tire survey highlights essential road trip vehicle preparations

New research from the Hankook Tire Gauge Index Survey highlights key preparation habits and concerns for drivers planning road trips. The survey found that 58% of drivers prioritize bringing a spare tire and tools, yet only 44% actually check their spare tire before a long drive.

To ensure vehicle readiness, experts recommend three primary steps:

1. Vehicle Inspection: While 86% of drivers check fuel levels, only 66% inspect engine fluids. Planning refueling or EV charging stops is critical, as 27% of drivers identify running out of fuel as a top concern.

2. Tire Maintenance: Although 78% of drivers check tire pressure, experts suggest also inspecting tire tread. A coin test—inserting a nickel or quarter heads-down into the groove—can determine if tires need replacement based on whether the head remains visible.

3. Emergency Essentials: Drivers are encouraged to pack necessary emergency supplies to avoid travel inconveniences, which 36% of Americans identified as a primary travel concern.
