Hannover Airport disrupted by drone sighting

A drone sighting at Hannover Airport caused significant disruptions to flight operations during the early hours of Tuesday. The incident led to the temporary closure of runways and airspace between approximately 4:00 AM and 5:20 AM. Six passenger flights were delayed, and a cargo aircraft arriving from Paris was diverted to Nuremberg Airport.

German authorities, including the Central Criminal Investigation Department of Hannover, are investigating the matter. According to internal police reports cited by Der Spiegel, investigators have not ruled out the possibility of 'hybrid activity,' which refers to potential interference in critical infrastructure by foreign state actors.

Notably, the drone was not detected by standard police or German Air Traffic Control detection systems, leading officials to suspect it may not be a standard commercial model. This incident follows a similar event a week prior at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone containing explosives was discovered near an Antonov aircraft. While the timing is concerning, authorities stated it is currently impossible to establish a direct link between the Hannover sighting and the Leipzig incident.
