Germany increases anti-drone security following multiple sightings
The German military (Bundeswehr) has reported several hundred security-relevant drone sightings over its installations since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. At Leipzig/Halle Airport, a drone equipped with explosives was discovered near Ukrainian cargo aircraft, prompting a federal investigation. Additionally, drone sightings at Hannover Airport caused temporary airspace closures and flight delays. In response to these escalating threats, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced plans to expand the Federal Police's anti-drone unit, aiming to increase specialized personnel to 300 and deploy teams across eight strategic locations in Germany to enhance the protection of critical infrastructure.
