Deutsche Bahn closes Berlin-Hannover rail line for 14-month renovation

Deutsche Bahn has begun a massive 14-month renovation of the critical 230-kilometer rail corridor between Berlin and Hannover/Lehrte. The project, expected to last until December 2027, involves replacing hundreds of kilometers of tracks, switches, and overhead lines, as well as modernizing approximately two dozen stations.

Due to the full closure, long-distance trains are being diverted via Braunschweig and Magdeburg, which will add roughly 80 minutes to travel times. This disruption affects connections between Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. Consequently, ICE services will no longer stop in Wolfsburg and Stendal until at least the end of the year. However, Magdeburg is set to receive three additional ICE connections toward Hannover, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Berlin.

Regional services will face significant disruptions, with many passengers required to use replacement buses. A major technical challenge is the renewal of over 50 kilometers of concrete track bed near Stendal. While the parallel Lehrter Stammbahn was intended to alleviate traffic, its electrification will not be completed until December 2027, preventing it from serving as a diversionary route during this period.
