Hannover-Hamburg railway: Bundestag to vote on new line
A long-standing debate regarding the construction of a new railway line between Hannover and Hamburg has intensified as the German Bundestag prepares to vote on the project. Deutsche Bahn supports the new route to alleviate extreme congestion on the existing line, which currently operates at up to 147 percent capacity. The existing corridor is a vital link for long-distance travel and freight, connecting the Port of Hamburg to southern Germany and Europe.
The proposal has caused a rift within the governing coalition of Lower Saxony. While the Green Party supports the new construction as a necessary step to increase capacity for passengers and goods, the SPD-led state government, including Minister-President Olaf Lies and Transport Minister Grant Hendrik Tonne, favors upgrading existing tracks to better serve commuters and rural areas.
The Bundestag's transport committee is scheduled to discuss the draft resolution on September 23, with a full parliamentary vote expected the following day. The proposed new route would be designed for speeds up to 250 km/h, potentially running more directly along the A7 motorway.
