Hannover Medical School doctor acquitted of murder charges

A 49-year-old doctor from the Hannover Medical School has been acquitted of murder and attempted murder by the Hannover Regional Court. The court found no evidence of criminal conduct, with presiding judge Britta Schlingmann stating that the physician acted exclusively for the welfare of his patients.

The doctor had been accused of attempting to kill an 82-year-old woman in May 2019 and was linked to the deaths of two intensive care patients: a 20-year-old in June 2020 and a 71-year-old in March 2025. Prosecutors alleged he had terminated therapies and used medication to cause death.

Following the acquittal, the court ruled that the doctor should be compensated for his time spent in pretrial detention. Both the prosecution and the defense had called for an acquittal during the proceedings.
