Hannover residents evacuated due to suspected WWII bombs
Approximately 17,500 residents in the Misburg district of Hannover are being evacuated due to the suspected discovery of two unexploded bombs from World War II. The items were found during exploratory work for the planned Steinbruchsfeld-Ost quarter.
Authorities have established a one-kilometer safety radius around the discovery sites. Residents are advised to leave their homes by 9:00 AM and are encouraged to bring essential items such as medication, infant formula, and adequate clothing. A support center has been set up at the IGS Roderbruch school in Groß-Buchholz, with free shuttle buses provided to transport affected individuals.
The duration of the evacuation depends on whether the objects are confirmed as ordnance and whether they require defusing or controlled detonation. Officials expect residents may not be able to return to their homes until the evening hours.
Local public transportation is significantly impacted. The Üstra transit operator reported disruptions to tram line 7 and bus lines 124 and 127. Specific service adjustments have been implemented to navigate around the safety zone.
