Hannover's Continental factory site faces imminent demolition
The former Continental AG factory site in Hannover, a well-known ‘lost place’ in Germany, is scheduled for demolition. The site, located at the Stichkanal Linden, is part of the Wasserstadt Limmer development project.
Authorities determined that the century-old, heritage-protected buildings cannot be preserved due to contamination with carcinogenic nitrosamines. While demolition was originally intended to begin in September, delays occurred due to the coordination required between multiple agencies and the necessity of removing hazardous materials first.
The demolition is being expedited to comply with nature conservation timelines. Work is expected to begin in November and must be completed by March 2027 to avoid disturbing bat nests that have been used by the mammals in the area.
