Hanoi addresses parking shortages and EV charging integration

A scientific workshop held in Hanoi on September 26, 2026, addressed the critical shortage of parking infrastructure and the growing need to integrate electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Experts and officials discussed the legal frameworks and practical solutions for developing smart parking lots with a 100-year vision.

Hanoi faces a significant deficit in land allocated for static transport. While urban planning standards recommend 3-4% of land for such purposes, current allocations are below 1%. With a population exceeding 8 million and approximately 9.2 million motor vehicles expected by late 2025, existing parking facilities meet only 8-10% of the total demand. This shortage forces many vehicles to utilize sidewalks, public spaces, and vacant lots.

To support the national Net Zero 2050 goal, experts proposed transitioning from traditional parking lots to smart transport-energy service centers. These centers would integrate vehicles, energy, data, and utility services. However, technical challenges remain, including managing high electrical loads from simultaneous fast-charging, ensuring fire safety, and planning for necessary power grid upgrades and transformer capacities.
