Hanoi advances contactless public‑transport ticketing

Vietnam’s capital is accelerating the shift from paper tickets to cash‑free fare collection. Hanoi has introduced electronic bus cards on subsidised routes and is piloting Visa tap‑to‑pay at metro gates, aiming to eliminate the need for cash or paper tickets.

The transition highlights speed and usability gaps. Local QR‑code scanners on buses take 2–3 seconds per check, slowing boarding during rush hour, whereas Japan’s NFC IC cards such as Suica process in 0.1–0.2 seconds, allowing continuous passenger flow. Officials see the need for a single, open payment ecosystem that works across buses, metro, and other services, replacing fragmented, closed‑loop ticketing systems.

User experience concerns include multiple readers on a single device and unclear guidance for new riders. Improvements target a single tap point with instant audio‑visual feedback, matching international standards and simplifying travel for Hanoi’s commuters.
