Hanoi bans planting of 18 specific tree species
Hanoi has implemented Decision No. 143/2026/QD-UBND regarding the management of parks, greenery, and water surfaces. The regulation includes a list of 18 tree species prohibited from being planted within the city, such as rubber, oleander, bồ kết, and bồ hòn (Sapindus mukorossi).
Authorities cited the presence of toxins in the fruit as the reason for the ban on bồ hòn. This decision has drawn significant attention because bồ hòn fruit has traditionally been used by households as a natural soap substitute for cleaning clothes, particularly delicate fabrics like silk and wool, due to its high saponin content.
Additionally, the city has released a list of 33 approved tree species for streets and public areas. While the milkwood pine (hoa sữa) is not explicitly listed in either the approved or prohibited categories, experts suggest that the city should avoid planting new milkwood pines in densely populated areas due to their strong scent and the hygiene issues caused by falling flowers.
