Hanoi bans planting of specific tree species in public spaces

The Hanoi People's Committee has issued Decision No. 143/2026/QD-UBND, which includes 18 tree species prohibited from being planted on streets and in public parks and spaces throughout the capital. The regulation, signed by Chairman Vu Dai Thang, is set to take effect on October 22, 2026.

Among the prohibited species is the soapberry tree (Sapindus mukorossi). While the fruit contains saponin, which is used as a natural cleaning agent and in traditional medicine for ailments like coughs and fevers, the decision cites the presence of toxic substances in the fruit as the reason for the ban. Authorities warn that consuming the fruit or its extracts can cause irritation or digestive issues.

Another species mentioned in the context of local flora is Allospondias lakonensis, commonly known as the dâu da tree. While widely distributed across Asia and used for its fruit and wood, it is also subject to the new management regulations regarding urban greenery in the city.
