Hanoi becomes Vietnam's most densely populated city
According to the 2025 Statistical Yearbook released by the General Statistics Office, Hanoi has become the most densely populated province/city in Vietnam, with an average of 2,636 people per km². This density is approximately 1.3 times higher than that of Ho Chi Minh City, which follows with 2,031 people per km².
Vietnam's total population has reached over 102 million people, with a national average density of 308 people per km². Regionally, the Red River Delta maintains the highest density at 1,041 people per km², followed by the Southeast at 758 people per km².
Long-term urban planning for Hanoi forecasts a population increase to between 14 and 15 million people by 2035, and potentially up to 20 million by 2085. The city aims to develop into a green, smart, and modern urban center while managing population thresholds to ensure sustainable density standards.
