Hanoi chlorine gas leak hospitalizes dozens

A chlorine gas leak occurred around 6:00 AM on October 19 in Me Son village, Thuong Phuc commune, Hanoi, after a scrap metal worker accidentally struck a valve on a medical-grade liquid chlorine tank with scrap iron. The incident caused the tank lid to pop off, releasing toxic gas into a residential area.

Approximately 42 people required medical attention. Most victims were treated at Thuong Tin General Hospital, while several severe cases were transferred to Bach Mai Hospital. Among the critically ill is a 50-year-old scrap collector who suffered severe respiratory failure, lung damage, and shock, requiring VV-ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment. Another patient suffered second-degree corneal burns.

Local authorities and fire rescue teams responded to the scene to contain the leak and secure the area. Police are currently investigating the origin of the gas tank and determining the legal responsibilities of the individuals involved.
