The Hanoi People's Procuracy has proposed severe sentences for 65 defendants involved in a major corruption and drug scandal at the National Institute of Forensic Psychiatry.

Nguyen Thi Mai Anh, identified as the ringleader, faces a proposed total of 30 years in prison for fraud, bribery, and mediation of bribery. Her husband, Le Van Dong, faces 17 to 19 years for drug possession and organized drug use. The prosecution alleges the couple used bribes to secure freedom of movement and evade medical supervision while undergoing mandatory treatment.

Former Institute Director Tran Van Truong is proposed to receive 20 years in prison for receiving over 8 billion VND in bribes. The prosecution claims he accepted funds to falsify psychiatric evaluations for 27 individuals, allowing them to avoid criminal prosecution by being declared mentally unfit. Other former officials, including former directors and deputy directors, face sentences ranging from 7 to 11 years.

During the trial, Mai Anh denied many bribery allegations, claiming she actually coerced staff into accepting money to facilitate her movement. However, several former doctors and nurses testified to receiving cash and luxury trips from the couple to allow them to escape the institute.
