Hanoi expands urban greening on transport infrastructure
Hanoi is implementing new urban greening initiatives to increase vegetation across its transportation infrastructure. The Hanoi Department of Construction has planned pilot projects to plant climbing plants around elevated railway pillars on Nguyen Trai Street, as well as around overpasses and bus stops.
To protect structural integrity, the plan involves installing steel frames around railway pillars rather than drilling into the concrete. For underpasses, such as the Le Van Luong - To Huu tunnel, planters will be placed along the edges to allow plants to hang down, with regular pruning to ensure they do not obstruct traffic, lighting, or technical equipment.
In addition to infrastructure projects, existing green spaces like Phung Khoang Park are serving as vital “green lungs” for the southwest of the city. Spanning 11.8 hectares, the park provides essential ecosystem services including drainage and environmental improvement, while offering residents space for exercise and community interaction.
