Hanoi approves scheme to assign specific tree species to streets
The Hanoi People's Committee has approved a new scheme for the management and development of the city's greenery, parks, gardens, and water surfaces. A central feature of this plan is the orientation to establish a unique landscape identity for each street by designating one or two dominant tree species per route.
To improve aesthetic uniformity and simplify maintenance, the city aims to limit the variety of tree species on a single street. The selection process will consider urban characteristics: historical inner-city areas will prioritize trees with traditional value and compact canopies; administrative and political centers will use formal, orderly species; new urban areas and major boulevards will favor fast-growing trees with wide canopies for shade; and industrial zones will prioritize species that filter dust and reduce noise.
Additionally, the regulations mandate that developers must minimize the cutting or relocation of existing trees during road expansions or sidewalk renovations. Projects must include plans for greenery that align with urban design and landscape requirements.
