Lao National Assembly President Xaysomphone Phomvihane passes away

Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of Laos and a member of the Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, passed away on August 8, 2026, at the age of 70. The cause of death was reported as severe vasculitis.

In response to his passing, the Lao government has declared a five-day national mourning period from August 9 to August 13, 2026. The official funeral service is scheduled to take place on August 13 at the That Luang Esplanade in Vientiane.

To express condolences, a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man is scheduled to travel to Vientiane on August 9 to pay respects. Phomvihane was noted for his extensive leadership experience and his significant contributions to the development of Laos and the strengthening of relations between Laos and Vietnam.
