Hanoi Man Hospitalized After Drinking Three Glasses of Juice Daily

Nguyen Mai Long, a 48‑year‑old resident of Hanoi, followed a popular "detox" regimen that involved drinking three glasses of fruit juice each day for two weeks. After the period, he experienced extreme fatigue, excessive thirst and nausea. Medical tests revealed a sharp rise in blood glucose and elevated uric acid levels, leading to his admission to the Central Endocrine Hospital.

Doctors warned that the practice removes most dietary fiber, causing rapid sugar absorption and metabolic imbalance. ThS. BS Nguyen Giang Nam, deputy head of the day‑treatment department, said the high intake of natural sugars from juice can increase blood sugar and uric acid, raising the risk of gout attacks. Nutritionist Dao Minh Hien added that consuming 1.5–2 liters of juice daily can trigger similar health issues, emphasizing the need for balanced diets over juice‑only detoxes.
