Hanoi officials address environmental bottlenecks
Hanoi authorities are prioritizing the resolution of environmental issues that directly impact public health and daily life. During a recent questioning session held by the Hanoi People's Council, officials identified environmental protection as one of five critical bottlenecks facing the city due to rapid urbanization.
Key concerns raised by delegates include the accumulation of waste on sidewalks, the improper mixing of hazardous medical waste with domestic refuse, and the illegal dumping of waste in fields and lakes. The session highlighted a significant infrastructure deficit, noting that while approximately 1,400 construction projects are underway across the city, there are only three designated locations for solid waste processing. This shortage has contributed to the illegal burial of construction and hazardous waste.
Local leaders have been tasked with explaining the root causes of these issues and providing specific timelines for remediation. Officials are also reviewing the effectiveness of decentralization and the allocation of resources to ensure local authorities have the capacity to manage environmental protection effectively.
