VNeID accounts in Vietnam face automatic locking due to mobile number changes

Starting September 28, 2026, new regulations regarding electronic identification (eID) in Vietnam will take effect under Decree 320/2026/ND-CP. A major change involves the automatic locking of VNeID accounts if the mobile phone number registered to the account is no longer officially owned by the user. This measure aims to ensure consistency between digital identities and mobile subscriber information to prevent identity theft.

Users are advised to verify that their registered phone numbers are correctly linked to their legal identity to avoid service disruptions. Additionally, the system will synchronize the status of eID accounts with electronic ID cards.

Regarding accessibility, foreigners legally residing in Vietnam are also eligible to obtain eID accounts. These accounts can be used to facilitate administrative procedures, access public services, and perform electronic transactions in sectors such as banking, telecommunications, and e-commerce. Furthermore, the VNeID application has recently integrated a feature allowing users to search for information on wanted criminals to assist in maintaining public security.
