Hanoi plans large social housing projects as social security funds earn interest
Hanoi is incorporating several large-scale social housing projects into its urban planning. These developments are spread across districts including Ha Dong, Dong Anh, Gia Lam, Thanh Tri, and Hoa Lac. The largest proposed site is in the Hoa Lac urban area, covering approximately 157 hectares, with 108 hectares dedicated specifically to social housing. This project is expected to serve roughly 31,180 residents.
In the realm of social security, Vietnam Social Security has reported significant earnings from bank interest. Between 2016 and mid-2025, term deposits in commercial banks generated nearly 70 trillion VND in profit. The total investment balance in commercial banks has grown from 77.2 trillion VND to 298 trillion VND, representing an increase of over 386% since the end of 2016.
Additionally, experts are discussing the long-term management of apartment buildings. Professor Dang Hung Vo suggested that instead of debating whether apartments are assets or liabilities, authorities should focus on institutionalizing solutions for buildings that have reached the end of their useful life.
