Hanoi police fine woman for spreading false Facebook information

Police in the Hai Ba Trung Ward of Hanoi have issued an administrative fine of 12.5 million VND to a woman, identified as V. T. H, for posting unverified and speculative content on Facebook.

As of late August 2026, the woman's posts had garnered over 465,000 interactions, including 868 comments and 111 shares. Authorities noted that the content caused significant public concern and conflicting opinions. During questioning, the individual admitted that the information shared was unverified and false.

Under Decree No. 174/2026/ND-CP, the fine was imposed for providing and sharing fake, distorted, or slanderous information that insulted the reputation of organizations or agencies. The individual has also been ordered to remove the false information. Local police have issued a warning to the public to verify sources before sharing content on social media to avoid spreading misinformation.
