Hanoi police rescue teen after fake police scam demands 300 million VND

An online fraud operation impersonating police investigators called a 23‑year‑old man in Hanoi, alleging his involvement in money‑laundering and demanding that his family prepare 300 million VND to "resolve the case". The scammers repeatedly threatened the victim, instructed him to cut off contact with his relatives, and tried to isolate him.

Hanoi's Tây Hồ District police received a report from the victim's father and launched an urgent investigation. By analysing call data and conducting field checks, officers traced the young man to an alley in the Hai Bà Trưng area and then to a café on Vân Hồ 3 street. Police intervened, secured the teenager and returned him safely to his family, preventing the fraud from being carried out. Authorities are continuing to identify the perpetrators and have warned the public against responding to similar calls that claim to be from police, prosecutors or courts.

The incident highlights a growing pattern of phone scams in Vietnam that use fake official identities to pressure victims and extort large sums of money.
