Hanoi Police warn of fraudulent traffic fine SMS scams

Hanoi Police have issued an urgent warning regarding sophisticated scams involving fraudulent SMS messages. Criminals are impersonating police and traffic officers to notify citizens of unpaid “cold fines” (traffic violations) to steal assets.

The scammers use several tactics, including sending SMS or social media messages claiming a vehicle has committed a violation. These messages often contain links to fake websites designed to mimic the National Public Service Portal or other official government sites. To create a sense of urgency, perpetrators may claim that fines will be reduced by 50% if paid early or increased if not settled within 48 hours.

Once victims click the links, the fraudulent sites attempt to steal bank account details, passwords, or OTP codes. Authorities emphasize that official police agencies will never request fine payments or sensitive banking information via links sent through unidentified messages. Citizens are advised to verify traffic violations through official channels such as the VNeID or VNeTraffic applications, the Traffic Police Department's official website, or the National Public Service Portal.
