Hanoi restructures school network to prevent overcrowding

Hanoi is restructuring its educational network to prevent overcrowding and improve management through data-driven strategies. Following a reorganization process, the city now has 1,093 educational institutions, a reduction of 1,251 units from previous levels.

The current network includes 938 preschools and general education schools managed by local authorities, featuring 43 high-quality schools and 1,225 branches. The city maintains 124 high schools, 7 specialized schools for students with disabilities, and Hanoi Metropolitan University. Other vocational and college-level institutions have also seen reductions in numbers.

To manage a system of over 2.3 million students, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training is prioritizing digitalization. Currently, 100% of preschool and general education students have been assigned a Learning ID verified with the national population database, and 97.6% of students have digital academic records. For the 2026-2027 school year, the city aims to use this data to forecast needs, regulate resources, and address shortages in classrooms and teachers.
