Hanoi road construction projects cause safety and pollution concerns

Ongoing road expansion and upgrade projects in Hanoi are causing significant safety hazards and environmental issues for local commuters and residents.

On National Highway 6, specifically the 22 km stretch between Ba La and Xuan Mai, construction has resulted in a road surface riddled with potholes and deep craters. The project, which began in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2027, aims to expand the road to 8-10 lanes. However, current conditions include heavy dust during sunny weather and muddy, water-filled holes during rain. Residents report that broken water pipes have also caused flooding on the road, obscuring the depth of potholes and increasing the risk of accidents for motorcyclists.

Similarly, the expansion of Road 70 through Xuan Phuong Ward has led to intense dust pollution and traffic congestion. Construction activities, including earth excavation for drainage pipes, have left the area covered in debris and dust. Local residents have noted that dust levels remain high day and night, affecting living conditions. Furthermore, inadequate safety barriers and a lack of street lighting in certain construction zones have heightened the risk of accidents during nighttime hours.
