Hanoi woman sentenced to three years for abusing 82-year-old mother

A Hanoi court has sentenced Đào Thu Hiền to three years in prison for the crime of “Hành hạ cha mẹ” (abusing parents). The verdict follows reports that Hiền repeatedly physically and mentally abused her 82-year-old mother, Nguyễn Thị Bưởi.

The abuse, which occurred between March and May 2026, involved verbal insults, threats, and physical assaults. In one specific incident on May 14, 2026, Hiền reportedly struck and slapped her mother following a dispute over daily living matters. The victim suffered physical bruising and long-term psychological distress, including constant fear and anxiety. Hiền later surrendered to the authorities to seek leniency.
