Hans Kluge enters race for WHO Director-General

Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe, has announced his candidacy for the position of Director-General. Nominated by the Belgian government, Kluge becomes the third candidate to enter the race to succeed Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, whose second term expires in August 2027.

In accordance with new WHO guidelines designed to ensure a level playing field, Kluge will take a leave of absence from his regional duties starting August 21, 2026. During his absence, Corinne Capuano, the Director for Programme Management, will serve as the interim Officer-in-Charge for the European region.

Other candidates currently in the race include Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari, nominated by Qatar, and Hanan Balkhy, nominated by Saudi Arabia. Member states have until September 24 to submit nominations. The WHO Executive Board will eventually select a shortlist of candidates to be presented to the World Health Assembly for a final vote.
