Hans Niessl announces 2028 Austrian presidential candidacy

Hans Niessl, the former governor of Burgenland and current president of Sport Austria, has officially confirmed his candidacy for the 2028 Austrian federal presidential election. Niessl intends to run as a non-partisan candidate to appeal to a broad spectrum of the population.

He described his political positioning as being on the right regarding security, in the center regarding the economy, and on the left regarding social issues. To facilitate his campaign and manage donations, a support association has been established, with entrepreneur Andreas Binder among its members.

Niessl expressed confidence in securing the 6,000 required signatures of support, suggesting he could collect them quickly with the help of various mayors. He noted that while he is a member of the SPÖ, he views his candidacy as non-partisan and stated the party could either support him or field its own candidate.
