Hans Otto Theater celebrates 20 years at Potsdam location
The Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its current location at Schiffbauergasse by the Tiefen See. The anniversary event featured music, dance, and speeches from local officials.
Brandenburg Culture Minister Manja Schüle described the building as ‘an open house for an open society,’ noting that the theater demonstrates how diversity and imagination strengthen society. Potsdam Mayor Noosha Aubel referred to the venue as the ‘heartpiece’ of the Schiffbauergasse arts and culture district.
Designed by Cologne architect Gottfried Böhm, the building is characterized by its glass foyer and shell-shaped roofs. The theater is named after actor and resistance fighter Hans Otto, who was killed in 1933. The institution’s history in Potsdam dates back to 1795 with the ‘Kanaloper,’ though the original theater burned down in 1945. Following several decades of provisional locations and construction delays, the current permanent facility opened 20 years ago.
