Hans Vijlbrief calls for union negotiations over social security

Dutch Social Affairs Minister Hans Vijlbrief has issued a renewed call to labor unions to negotiate regarding the future of social security. This follows recent large-scale protests against proposed budget cuts.

A national public transport strike is threatened for next Wednesday. Minister Vijlbrief noted the potential disruption such a strike would cause to the general public. While the cabinet previously indicated a willingness to discuss benefit cuts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the social safety net, unions FNV and CNV continue to demand that all proposed cuts be withdrawn.

Leaked budget documents suggest the government may partially scrap or postpone certain measures. These include the controversial reduction of maximum benefits for the chronically ill and disabled, as well as a definitive decision to abandon a faster increase in the state pension (AOW) age. Despite these concessions, union leaders, including FNV chair Hans Spekman, maintain their actions as they believe the government's shifts demonstrate the effectiveness of protesting.
