Hans Zimmer and composers release ‘Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age’ soundtrack

The soundtrack for the Apple TV series ‘Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age’ has been released, featuring a score composed by Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve, and Anže Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music. The trio, who are Emmy nominees, utilized a blend of traditional orchestral elements and custom-built instruments to evoke the Pleistocene era.

To capture the specific atmosphere of the Ice Age, the composers used unique tools such as the Divje Babe flute—a replica of a Paleolithic bear femur instrument found in Slovenia—and an octobass to create low-frequency sounds for creatures like woolly mammoths. They also developed custom instruments like the ‘Triceratone’ to mimic the guttural sounds of extinct species.

The score aims to balance the beauty of the ancient world with the inherent sense of loss associated with extinct species. The music features a two-part theme designed to evoke both emotional connection and the eventual demise of the animals depicted in the series.
