Hansa Biopharma announces first Australian commercial kidney transplant using Idefirix

Hansa Biopharma has announced that the first commercial patient in Australia has received a living donor kidney transplant following treatment with Idefirix (imlifidase). The medication is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as a desensitization treatment for highly sensitized adult kidney transplant candidates who possess a positive cross-match against a donor.

Highly sensitized patients often face significant barriers to transplantation because their immune systems have pre-formed antibodies that react against various human leukocyte antigens, making it difficult to find compatible organs. Idefirix works by temporarily clearing these antibodies to allow for a successful transplant.

Patient outcomes from this procedure will be documented through an established registry in Australia to collect real-world clinical data. Idefirix is already approved in Switzerland, Israel, and Australia, with provisional approval in the European Union and several Scandinavian countries.
