Hanshin Tigers manager announces Daichi Ishii's transition to starting pitcher
Hanshin Tigers manager Kyuji Fujikawa announced on October 24 that relief pitcher Daichi Ishii will transition to a starting role starting next season. Ishii, 29, has been a standout in the bullpen, previously setting a professional record with 50 consecutive scoreless appearances.
Fujikawa cited Ishii's ability to control his pitch count per inning as a key strength that will serve him well in starting games. The manager also noted that the upcoming implementation of the Designated Hitter (DH) rule will further enhance Ishii's effectiveness within the lineup.
Ishii, who utilizes a fastball exceeding 150 km/h, is returning from a left Achilles tendon rupture sustained during spring camp. He expressed a desire to meet the manager's expectations, noting that his experience in middle relief could benefit his new role. Fujikawa emphasized that the decision aligns with the player's personal goals and the emergence of younger relief talent.
